I heard back from the doctor yesterday and my iron levels were a little low (not terribly anemic but worth noting). My T3 thyroid levels were also low. Its all a little confusing to me because HYPOthyroidism (low thyroid levels) is usually related to weight GAIN and low blood sugars (which I am experiencing the opposite). I asked the doctor about that and he said that is usually true except in cases of low T3. In thyroid language there is t3,t4, and tsh to consider. (From how I understand it t3 is the only one that is not totally related to thyroid function but also intertwined with several other systems within the body.) However, I haven't found anything via google about that. Then again.. I don't really have much time to do any research on it with two babies needing my attention and getting caught up in our home school. At any rate. What I do know is that diabetes and thyroid are directly related (they are all part of the endocrine system) and when one is stressed the other is likely to be as well. I have read that adding muscle mass will help both of these areas (which makes perfect sense as I have 0 muscle mass or fat). So, I will continue to work on building muscle mass. However I also read that exercising for more than 30 min at a time will cause the body to release the stress hormone cortisol which will increase blood sugars (which I have seen this happen first hand).
My appointment with the naturopathic doctor (N.P) is March 4th. I'm anxious to get the ball rolling with her :-)
I do feel good that I at least have a path that I can move forward with. We are falling into a nice routine at home too, which feels delightful. So, I guess I don't have much to complain about.

We all enjoyed having her here and I successfully completed my first day on my own with 2 babies and a 6 year old.
It actually went surprisingly well... I can do this!
Tonight I went to bed early because I really feel like my body just needs rest.... and here I am at 12:30am writing on my blog.
I hate that when you know you should be sleeping but your brain won't turn off. blah
Anyway, i thought this would be a good time to send out an update on the goings on around here.
Violet is such a sweet little baby. So easy. She sleeps a lot and well and basically only wakes up to eat.
its so funny to me how all three of my children were so so very different as babies.
Javan was the colicky one. He just cried and cried all of the time. I'm pretty sure nobody slept. All he wanted to do was nurse non-stop. I had to nurse him every 2 hours. Which he would literally nurse for 40 min if I let him and then it was another hour and a half later he wanted to nurse again. haha. he was a nut. It was a real workout (literally - bouncing and swaddling and swinging - whatever it took) to get him to sleep.
Cosette didn't want to be held too much. I never heard of such a thing before but it worked every time that she would cry and cry and you just lay her down and she was happy and content.
Violet is the opposite of Cosette. She LOVES being held. Most times if she cries (which she doesn't do often anyway) and she is not hungry... she just wants to be snuggled up on someone's chest and she is happy as can be.
So many people ask me whether Cosette is jealous. And she is NOT at all. She really loves her little baby sister. The only time she really cries about Violet is when we have to move Violet for fear she might get smothered (literally smothered) by all of the "kisses" and "hugs" she gives.... and occasional eye, nose, and mouth poking.
Javan, as I expected, is an awesome big brother. He loves to help and really is a HUGE help with Cosette. He loves to snuggle Violet :-)
As for my health, I am trying hard not to get too frustrated about the whole thing. When I was pregnant with Cosette, my blood sugars stabilized in the 3rd trimester and stayed that way until I got pregnant again.
With Violet, my blood sugars stabilized in the 3rd trimester but just last Friday they just went totally wacky again.
I spent a good amount of time in tears about it trying to figure out what to do. I really have a hard time with doctors.
They always seem to over prescribe and its frustrating (and a waste of money from my perspective) but the numbers kept on creeping up there and I knew something needed to be done.
My plan was to just get some insulin from the doctor.
That's it. Walk in. Get insulin - take it once or twice to get my numbers down and never go back.
Since every OTHER doc I have seen has been quick to pump me full of drugs I didn't think it would be an issue.
But, this time I went to Dr. Brooks who is well known for leaning in the direction of natural medicine (he is the one I saw for the pneumonia - he doesn't even vaccine his kids - one of many reasons why I love him)
He would NOT prescribe the insulin.
I couldn't decide if I was happy or mad about that. lol. I mean, its awesome that I finally found someone who was willing to look outside the diabetes box BUT..this was the ONE time I actually wanted it! haha.
Anyway, he did some bloodwork to see if he could pinpoint some kind of autoimmune disorder and/or an endrocrine blockage somewhere (thyroid??) One thing that is very clear is that my body is under a huge amount of stress and that ALONE can cause insulin resistance, add in some extra hormones, and some other issues and you've got a recipe for diabetes disaster.
Once Doc Brooks gives a little more insight (from the bloodwork). I am planning on moving to a naturopathic/homeopathic doctor (most likely in a addition to Doc Brooks - although I did discuss this plan with him and he was a-ok with me just using an NP) that can work with me on some homeopathic remedies, etc...
This Sunday at church I got prayer for healing.
One of the many prayer warriors at our church (who also is known for getting prophetic words) told me that The Lord told her to tell me that I'm on the right path. That before I was going down a different path but I changed to a new path and that is the right road.
This woman knew nothing about why I was getting prayer or anything about my situation. She wasn't one of the women who was praying for me. The Lord just spoke to her and she went ahead and relayed that message.
I assume what He meant was that before I was choosing to take care of this on my own but going to a DOCTOR and possibly a Naturopath as well is the new path I have decided to take and it IS the right path.
I really needed that affirmation. He is so good at knowing what I need to hear.
Always in awe of Him
In the meantime, my blood pressure is still high - argh. I was told that it can take quite awhile (for some people) to lower blood pressure after pregnancy. And for some, it never goes down naturally ... i don't even want to think about that. Then, I wonder, if it has anything to do with that digoxin that I was taking???
My biggest personal struggle is my weight. Of course, the weight loss was a side effect of that 2 weeks that I was sick with pneumonia. High blood sugars can also cause weight loss (its called ketosis and people actually do this on purpose to lose weight - think atkins). I realize that I'm not going to just gain weight overnight... but its painful when I look in the mirror. I weigh a measly 103lbs right now. I have NO butt. I really take the term "skin and bones" to a whole new level.
Its slightly comical because most people can't fit into their pre pregnancy clothes because of weight gain.
My pre-pregnancy clothes are falling off of me.
Of course, how does one gain weight when they can't really eat carbs??? I realize I need to solve the first problem (getting healthy) before I can really address this "side effect" but anyone who knows anything about me knows I tend to get a bit obsessive about things.
The best thing I can do is pack on the calories... well, vegetables aren't really all that calorie rich SO healthy oils and fats... extra protein.
I've decided to try to add some muscle mass to my body by working out... but its a VERY fine balance because i can't afford to burn more calories.
Anyway, it will all work out. I just need to take it slow and one day at a time.
So, here are a whole bunch of pics I've taken over the past month or two. The first ones are from a town festival we went to with Santa and bombfires in the middle of the street. It was really a fun night..
There are some from Christmas, a couple of Javan at his wrestling tourney and then some from the baby, of course....

So the much anticipated weight check was scheduled right before her 2am feeding. I requested that she be weighed before the 11am feeding just to gauge what we are looking at here.
She was down 8 grams.
Do you know how small 8 grams is...I didn't either...the nurse told me its about a tsp.
And you know they are strict enough here to let that keep us here.
I cried and fed and cried some more.
I noticed her security band had fallen off. I wonder how much that weighs...
Then I went to "sleep". Not really...I couldn't sleep.
The nurse came and took her 10 min ago.... I am waiting.... Praying....
And the verdict is......
She was up by 9 grams!!!!!
WE ARE GOING HOME!!!!!
that may or may not have to so with that little extra breastmilk I gave her 15 min before the nurse came in.
I promise I am an honest person...desperate times.....

Fattening up baby
Lance and I had a good time trying to think of ways to fatten her up for her big weigh in tomorrow. Lol
The test
Yesterday I was just too emotional to update. They said she wasn't ready to have her feeding tube removed.
They had all different reasons that I don't even feel like writing about even now. It seemed as though every person I talked to had a different reason for why violet was not ready to go home.
I spent so much of the day crying, tired, overwhelmed and missing my family ...
Today I had enough. I wanted to go home. End of story. Violet is fine and they can't keep us here.
Well it didn't go over as well as I had hoped. The doc said I needed to show she can gain weight off of the feeding tube.
And IF she gains then we can go home....tomorrow
I literally started bawling right in front of the doctor.
Eh well life is full of compromise, right? What's one more day when I've already spent a week.
Praying she gains weight today.

Surprise!
I came back for her 11am feeding and this is what I find.
No iv
No bilirubin lights
No bed warmer
Just my little sweetie all bathed and dressed ready to eat!
Now I just have to keep working on milk supply.
This morning they weighed her before and after feedings and found out she was getting 40ml-ish from me plus I pump about 20ml afterwards.
Of course today they upped the requirement to 60ml. Oi
Still, hopefully I can get my supply up quickly and get the heck outta here. I'm hoping for today but probably not until tomorrow.
I've been putting fennel oil on my skin and last night my good friend brought over some fennelgeek and rose hip herbs that all help increase milk supply.
I slept and slept between each feeding last night and was finally able to hold down a sandwich.
This morning I felt like a normal person (for the most part) and had a great breakfast.
Things are looking up!!!

Making progress!!
This morning miss Violet got her oxygen tube removed. That red mark on her temple is from the sticker that held it on.
And it was STICKY!!
We have lowered the dose from "d12" to "d10". We have also lowered the rate from 17 to 10 ml/hour.
the orange tube in her nose is her feeding tube. She is now up to 1.5 oz and tolerating it well.
Now the only thing left (aside from continuing to lower dose and kick that jaundice) is that I need to be able to pump 1.5 oz AFTER I nurse her. I guess their way of ensuring she is getting enough milk from me when we leave. That is about 45ml and I am pumping about 22ml.
Again another silly protocol but we are so ready to get out of here I don't care what I have to do.
It also didn't help that due to lack of sleep I just felt awful today. I slept all day in between feedings which comes to sleeping in about 2 hour stretches.
I also didn't eat lunch or dinner. Lack of sleep+lack of food=decrease milk supply.
Now that I am feeling like I can tolerate food, I plan on eating and getting some good sleep and GETTING OUTTA HERE!!
Sunbathing
Here is a pic of her under the bilirubin lights. She has to wear a mask to protect her eyes. You can see the oxygen tube in her nose. The 3 round stickers on her chest are connected to the monitor that watch her heart rate and breathing rate. The gold sticker is connected to the heat lamp. The thing on her foot monitors her oxygen level and the bandage in her arm is connected to the iv.
A little excessive...I know

the whole story...
Ok I am sitting in my new "home" for the weekend. I have been getting so many questions about how Violet is doing and how was the birth and why is she still in nicu.
And ive been kind of ignoring everyone.
Please don't take it personally.
The nicu is an interesting place. You are only allowed 2 people in at a time (one being the parent) No cell phones (although I break that rule all of the time) and no kids. It doesn't make it easy to chat it up and keep peeps up to speed.
It makes me so sad that Javan hasn't met his new sister yet.
I love my fancy phone but writing back to everyone's questions is time consuming.
So is trying to write a blog update which is why it has taken until now to do it. Please forgive the many typos. I'm tired and my phone thinks its smart and likes to change some words I type to the wrong words.
My hope is if i can get a good update on here then it will be easy to give little updates to everyone all at once.
Ok...so..
Monday night I woke up with some pretty intense contractions. They were painful enough to wonder if I was in labor but an hour apart which of course ruled out that possibility.
Tuesday Lance had taken off of work to take Javan to a field trip for me. I had also scheduled an ultrasound that morning. Of course, of all the days Lance was really feeling under the weather on Tuesday. on top of that ... I was having more and more of these painful contractions. Nothing consistant enough to think it was labor but definitely painful enough.
The ultrasound came back fine and we all went home and took a nap (except for Javan who delighted to get extra computer time).
At noon, lance and javan went on their field trip to tour the chiefs stadium and I stayed home with Cosette. That was when I started to speculate that maybe this is a little more than just braxton Hix but real labor.
Let's just say.. Having contractions every few min and entertaining a 1 year old is NOT easy.
At about 4pm lance came home and I had already called the midwife, amber, with an update and request that she stop by to check me.
Sure enough I was dialated 4-5 and was at the beginning stages of labor.
We sent amber home so she could get changed and eat some dinner while I labored for a bit and ate some dinner as well.
I'm not quite sure at what time it was that amber came back...maybe 6?? But she checked me again and I was dialated to about an 8 so we decided to head the hospital.
From there I can't really tell you how things went exactly...I was a little busy. Lol but I do know it was around 9pm that the doctor broke my water and Violet was born at 9:20.
She had really low blood sugars and they let me breastfeed for a few min but decided just to take her to the nicu and give her sugar water via iv.
Why low blood sugars? Well its common in big babies and diabetics. Basically she was getting too much sugar from me so her pancreas was producing insulin. Which worked out great in the womb but in the real world she didn't need that much....but her body wouldn't stop producing the extra insulin.
So the doctor basically is giving her extra sugar until her body could regulate itself. And this worked out fine over night on Tuesday and most of Wednesday.
But at some point on Wednesday her body decided to produce MORE insulin to cover the extra sugar she was getting. So they had to add MORE sugar to her iv.
And this would have probably worked out fine except that over night on Wednesday she started to do this extra rapid breathing. This is somewhat common in babies as a natural way to work out any extra fluid from birth...or extra fluid from the iv.....
So now she had to wear an oxygen tube (that's my really technical medical term lol).
The extra heavy breathing is the reason the nurses decided on Thursday that I could not hold or nurse her...which made for a very unhappy mamma.
On top if that her bilirubin bloodwork showed she was a bit jaundice and haveshe had to wear goggles and lay under a special light. Jaundice is a fairly common condition with babies. I have my theories about it and have good reason to believe she never would have gotten it if we had gone home right away BUT I don't feel like getting into yet another one of my theories...at any rate...its the easiest thing to solve with simply laying under the light.
Things started looking better on Friday when they decided that we can start lowering the dose of the sugar water as soon as my milk comes in.
So I started pumping like a crazy lady and rubbing fennel oil on me and eating it.
By Saturday morning my milk had come in and by Saturday evening they had lowered the dose of the sugar in her iv.
And that is where we are at now. Midnight on Saturday evening Im sitting here listening to her suck her pacifier while they pump my breastmilk in her stomach. Its about as backwards as it gets but that's basically what the medical community has become....so wrapped up in "protocol" that common sense is completely forgotten. Ah well..at this point lance and I will do whatever it takes to get our little girl home.

There have been a few requests for a prego pic since I was never this big with my other babies.
So here you go!
I know my upper body is sooooo skinny. I lost so much weight when I got sick and I can't seem to gain it back.
I feel as though the baby has dropped which has really helped with me being able to sleep better without her sticking her feet under my ribs.
The swelling in my legs is just absolutely awful though. Bending them is extremely difficult. Putting shoes, socks, or pants on has become an Olympic sport and Im pretty sure most nursing home patients could easily beat me in a race up the stairs.
I'm counting down the weeks! It won't be much longer of this. I'm so thankful for all the help I get from javan and lance.

There really is no place like home
It feels soooo good to be home. Its funny how much you appreciate the snuggle of your children. The smell
of your own house. The glimmer of some sunshine...
Ok, i'm getting cheesy here but seriously I can't even explain how wonderful it feels to be home!!
So, here's the update:
Its a perinatologist group at St. Lukes that is caring for me so its always a different doctor of the same team
that comes and talks to me each day.
.
Last night I was told I could go home today and then this morning, the doctor comes in and informs me that
although it is great that her heart rate is totally stable, a baby with hydrops (fluid on her heart) can easily go
back up to high heart tones and I need to stay for another day...He also wanted to do another sonogram
tomorrow too since it would be "pointless" to do one today. It would be too soon for the hydrops to
clear up.
I was totally heart broken. I can't tell you how horrible it is to sit in a hospital room, tied up to a
monitor all day. BORING.
So, anyway, after some thought, prayer, and discussion with my midwife I decided I'm making the decision
to leave. When the doctor got news of my decision he set up a sono for me to do before I go.
They wheel-chaired me to the sonographer and she just was the nicest lady. The sonographer said to me
"So, this baby had hydrops?"
"Yup" I say.
"Well she doesn't have any hydrops anymore!"
PRAISE HIM, MY FRIENDS. ALL OF YOUR PRAYERS WORKED!
The doctor said, well, most babies with hydrops don't clear up THAT fast. I don't see any reason you need
to stick around here. With the way your baby has recovered from this medication she "should" have no
problems after you have her.
Thank you for all of your concern and prayer. He chose to heal
our baby girl - and faster than the doctors expected!!
I am still diligently praying that the excess amnioitic fluid will go down now that the hydrops is resolved (md
said there was a good chance it will correct itself too) which will also give relief of the fluid in my legs. But,
those are secondary things. I have a healthy baby in my tummy and I am home...that's all I could ask for.
Now I'm going to lay down in that nice comfy bed of mine and get some good rest...
Sunday, December 9, 2012
So, it all started with a little head cold. Which usually I am pretty good about fighting colds but this one wiped me out. I finally called Lance and said "I think I need to see a doctor."
Well, sure enough...I had pneumonia and was stuck in bed for about 2 weeks.
Now before this, if you remember, I was having a hard time keeping my blood sugars down. They were lower but not where they should be. Well, after THIS they were just totally out of control. There was just nothing I could do to keep them under control. I even tried using insulin but laying in bed and being sick just was too much of a battle.
So, anyway, I emailed my sister to ask about a chinese broth recipe I could eat since that was all that I could tolerate at the time..she sent me a gift that I can never repay her for....oils.
Well, I could actually repay her financially for the oils but that is not what I mean. I mean that these crazy oils that have been used from the beginning of time (including on baby Jesus when he was born). Actually stabilized my diabetes!! After about 2 days of rubbing them on my feet, neck, and inside of my arms... my glucose numbers began to be in perfect range of where I need them. Ahhh!!!
So, two things down now... The pneumonia is all better and the diabetes is healed.
Those two things were gradually replaced with 2 new issues...
1. I noticed my tummy suddenly got quite big. I was so nervous that it was because baby decided to grow into a huge baby because the blood sugars were out of control while I was sick. Because of this, I didn't think much more about it.
2.The week of Thanksgiving my legs started swelling. Not like a little swelling on my ankles but like SWELLING like I couldn't fit my pants on kind of swelling from the top of my legs to my toes. Doing anything became a struggle by the end of the day I could barely walk! My suspicion was that the swelling was due to the extra weight from that huge tummy.
My 28 week appt was during Thanksgiving week and it just didn't work out to get together. She had a birth and we were going out of town. So, we got together at 29 weeks instead. The swelling was alarming but even more alarming was my tummy was measuring at 36 weeks and she could easily feel that there was so much fluid in my stomach that she could barely feel baby. So, we talked about it over the next week. Tried a few different things, kept measuring my tummy, but nothing was changing really. So, we decided to make a trip to the doctor to see what he thought.
Basically, he told me that excess amniotic fluid does happen from time to time and healthy babies can still come from it. There isn't much you can do about it unless you know the true cause. The swelling, he believed, was due to the extra weight in my stomach. But, he ordered an ultrasound to see if we can find out HOW MUCH extra amniotic fluid and make sure baby is healthy.
So, the next day... off I went to an ultrasound. The sonographer was pretty quiet the whole time so we didn't really notice that maybe something was wrong. Out she went...in comes the radiologist, who read the sonogram.
He said that there is 35cc's of fluid. The HIGH end of average is 15cc - so that is ALOT of fluid. Then she said "we spoke with your midwife so just go home and put your feet up until you hear from her."
ok... strange.. "let's go eat!"
I call the midwife and she comments about the fluid and then she said but did she tell you about the heartrate?
Ugh ... no
"Well, baby's heart is just racing, Merrie, I've called the doctor and they want you to be admitted in the hospital. I'm not sure what they are going to do but they are going to prepare you for a c-section just in case."
wwwha wha what?!?!
Talk about your world just getting flipped upside down. What is it with me and pregnancy these days? I just can't seem to have a normal old boring pregnancy like everyone else.
So, we go in to the hospital. The staff was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Honestly, if I was a hospital birth type of gal, I would choose there. what a great group of people.
The doctor really wasn't experienced in this type of situation and consulted with the specialists that he works with. In the meantime, they gave me steriods to help baby's lungs mature faster in case we need to do a c-section. Her heart rate was so high that it wouldn't even read it on the monitor. Approximately, 240's...
I tried to sleep that night... my thoughts of what that ultrasound was going to show, what were the specialists going to do and is my baby going to make kept flooding my mind. I tried my best to give it to God. I'm so thankful to have THE Great Comforter there to lean on.
We didn't get into the ultrasound until 10:45. Talk about a nerve wracking morning! The specialists did an extensive ultrasound that looked at every part of baby. The good news is that baby is healthy in every way..
The bad news is there isn't really an explanation as to why this was happening. They did find a bit of extra fluid in her heart and stomach and concluded that this rapid heartrate must have been happening for awhile and caused this.
That doesn't make much sense because never at any of my prenatal exams or even the doctors appt the day before did they find a heartrate that high.
I think it was all just God's perfect timing... and this was the first time it happened and God timed it so we caught it right away. Truthfully, it doesn't matter when as much as - are we going to be able to fix it.
Speaking of God's perfect timing... mom was talking about coming out and then changed her mind and decided not to and kept on going back and forth. I was pretty sure she had decided NOT to come but I guess she just couldn't miss Cosette's first birthday party.
Little did SHE know that God had a greater purpose for her to come out to KS - since we ended up canceling the birthday party. I guess God knew I was going to need her help here.
Anyway, back to my story. So, the specialists decided to send us to the hospital they work out of more frequently so they can monitor me and baby and treat us.
They talked about several different treatments to try before c-section.
The first was a medicine that they actually give me. Its a double dose for my body - which is slightly dangerous. They monitored me closely with a daily ekg, etc...but they need to give me that high of a dose in order to get enough to baby.
So, the shots started on Friday morning. I felt fine... and we watched the monitor all day Friday and only saw the heartrate line scrape the very top of the highest reading all day - no change.
More shots on Saturday and another entire day of complete boredom - stuck in a room attached to a monitor that showed no good news ... just baby's heartrate scraping the top of the highest line possible on the monitor.
By Sat night I was ready to totally lose it so we asked if there was anyway we can go for a walk. they strapped on this wireless monitor that doesn't go much further than 4 small hallways but I took what I could get. Lance and I traced and retraced our steps for about 20 or so min. it felt good to just get some energy out and burn a little.. even if it was an incredibly boring view. I had great company ;-)
When we got back I got settled in and Lance packed up and went home.
Not too long after that (about 10:30) the nurse came in and said "did you see what your baby is doing?!?!?!?!"
I look at the monitor and her heartrate was 180!!!!! I couldn't believe my eyes. The medicine finally started kicking in or maybe the walk helped or maybe God just healed or maybe... eh who cares HOW it happened!!! I was sooo excited but tried not to get too excited in case it goes back up and then I have to face the worst kind of disappointment.
I slept that night. I actually slept. (putting aside the many times I had to be woken up to get meds or blood drawn or blood pressure check, etc, etc, etc...)
They woke me at 5am for meds and 6am for blood draw and by 6:30 my grumbling stomach decided to keep me up so I started to get out of bed.....looked at the monitor and COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EYES!! 160's!!!!!
The doc came in and told me that they will keep me for 1 more day to monitor her. I will have to be on this med until full term. They had to go mess up my blood sugars with the steriods (eh hem or it could have been those pancakes I ate on the first day because I was so starving. Its THIER fault.. they made me go 24 hours without eating in case I was having a csection) so I have to prove to them that I have it under control before they will let me go.
....and then I am outta here!!! with a healthy baby in my tummy!!
Praise God Praise God Praise God!!!!
